This is a painting so called "painting of Shaka's eight-phase nirvana", depicting the eight major events in His life, with His death (or entering nirvana: nyuumetsu) in the center and with the remaining seven events on the periphery. The eight events are as follow:
According to the inscription of donor, this painting was donated by Soubei Fukui in 1688 (the first year of the Genroku era), and was created by a painter (or Take-no-bou), who specialized in Buddhist religious paintings, Left Gate Guard (or Saemon-no-jou) Eishin at painting atelier of the southern capital, currently Nara Prefecture, (or at nanto-edokoro). This painting depicts details on people and animals in mourning carefully and lively with vivid colorings and free lines.
The size of the painting is 280cm height x 228cm width, which makes the work one of the largest Buddhist paintings in the city.
The painting is considered as a precious work because the year of donation and
its painter are the most ancient among those of the Nirvana paintings in the city.
Its remarkably well preserved original condition is worthy of appreciation.
In addition, this is a donation from the individual deeply
involved in the history of the Kamida area and thus, it is considered the important material
to trace the history of the city.
