Neyagawa City (Neyagawa-shi), as named after the river "Neyagawa River" running through the center of this city, has history that residents in this area have tackled difficulties to realize coexistence in harmony with "water". through river conservation and water control.
The city has spotted relics of the Old Stone Age on the hilly area. The Bay
of Kawachi-wan, once extending as far as its south part in the eras of Jomon
to Yayoi, had been providing people with rich agricultural crops and playing
an important role of the route through which various culture and techniques
were transmitted.
Yodogawa River (Yodo-gawa), running through the northwest side of the city also played very significant role as a main artery for transferring people and products since long time ago, meanwhile it had afflicted people residing in the areas along the course of a river caused by frequent floods from the ancient period to Meiji Era. On the other hand, people who lived on the hillside had toiled to acquire diversion of waterr from the river.
Located near Nara and Kyoto, both of which were the ancient capital of Japan, the manors of temples and shrines were established in medieval times with a religious authrity under the aegis of imperial families and nobles.
In 1889, in the 22nd year of Meij Era, according to the enforcement of the new
community system, there have been established Kukasho Village (Kukasho-mura),
Tomorogi Village (Tomorogi-mura) of Matta County (Matta-gun), Toyono Village
(Toyono-mura), Neyagawa Village (Neyagawa-mura) of Sanra County (Sanra-gun)
and Mizumoto Village (Mizumoto-mura) of Katano County (Katano-gun). After each
county was unified as Kita Kawachi County (Kita-kawachi-gun) in 1896, Kukasho
Town (Kukasho-cho), Tomorogi Village, Toyono Village (Toyono-mura) and Neyagwa
Village (Neyagawa-mura) were unified to be Neyagawa Town (Neyagawa-cho).
Neyagawa City was born in 1951 when the new "city" (shi) system became
effective. The present range of the city was formed after the incorporation
with Mizumoto Village (Mizumoto-mura) in 1961 and a part of the city was incorporated
to Daito City in 1966.
Since then it has continuously developed to be a residential
city. In 2001, on the 50th anniversary of its municipality establishment, the
city became a formally designated city.
